About the FSA Collection

The Farm Security Administration’s photography program created one of the most comprehensive visual archives of rural America. In Montana, FSA photographers documented:

  • Dryland and irrigated agriculture
  • Ranching and grazing systems
  • CCC and SCS conservation projects
  • Small towns, homesteads, and community life
  • Infrastructure, roads, and public works

These images provide essential context for understanding New Deal interventions, environmental change, and the lived experience of rural Montanans during the 1930s and early 1940s.
